Layer: Water Wells
This layer presents information on the location and physical characteristics of, and the availability of water chemistry for, geothermal resources in Washington State. This dataset includes water wells in which assumed bottom-hole temperatures were measured and from which a geothermal gradient was estimated. We use the term 'assumed' to denote that the location of the temperature measurement within the borehole is assumed to be the bottom, although this is generally unknown; temperatures from this dataset should be considered minimum bottom-hole temperatures, and estimated gradients are thus, conservative. This layer may be viewed in the interactive map symbolized by either calculated geothermal gradient or assumed bottom-hole temperature.
This dataset includes wells previously published by the Washington Division of Geology and Earth Resources, additional unpublished data, wells obtained from the Southern Methodist University Regional Heat Flow Database (Blackwell, 2010), borehole temperature measurements from the U.S. Geological Survey water database (Elizabeth Fasser, USGS, written commun., 2010), and well information from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
The chemical analyses are available through the interactive map. Wells with available chemical analyses, once selected with the Identify Tool, appear with a plus sign (+) next to the well name in the left-hand pane of the Identify Features window; clicking on the plus sign will show a list of available analyses, and clicking on a sample date in the list will display the analysis results in the right-hand pane of the Identify Features window.
The chemical analyses are also available through the downloadable data file, via a related table [water_chemistry] within the file geodatabase [geothermal_wells.gdb]. Records in the related table can be matched up with features in the Water Well Locations feature class using the Water Well ID field. The chemistry data are primarily from the originating publication (Schuster and Bloomquist, 1994); please see that publication for more information.
